Mrs. Agnes Moore, 92, of Bradford died Sunday, Oct. 11, 2009.   She was preceded in death by her husband, W.C. Moore; one daughter, Wanda Adkins; her parents, Jessie Burchfield and Ruth Rowley; one sister, Monnie Grimes; and two grandchildren, Jason Staude, Rickey McSpadden.  Mrs. Moore is survived by two daughters, Imogene McSpadden (Ray) of Bradford, and Donna Acosta-Nady (Iry) of Bradford; one brother, Milburn Burchfield of Newport; one sister, Nina Jones of Michigan; several grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.  Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2009 at the Bradford Church of Christ. Mr. Billy Joe Simons, 73, of Newport died Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2009 at Jonesboro.  He was born Nov. 9, 1935 in Harrisburg, the son of Charlie and Bessie Simons. Mr. Simons was a scrap yard owner and operator, and enjoyed fishing. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Vestal Simons and J.R. Simons; and one sister, Betty Sue Fox. Funeral services for Maggie Eldridge, 89 of the Southland community, will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009 at Spring Lake MB Church. Rev. R.P. Taylor will officiate. Maggie Mae Dodd was born on April 14, 1920 in Glendora, Miss. to Walter and Ollie Fair Dodd. She was the oldest of five children. The family then relocated to the Southland community in 1937. Maggie Eldridge was taught shaped-notes music in the sixth grade where she found her passion for singing gospel music. She received Christ at an early age at the Spring Lake MB Church where she was a faithful member until the decline of her health.  She was united in holy matrimony on April 7, 1941 to the late Daniel Eldridge “Big Dan.”  To this union six children were born.  They also shared a partnership to manage a large farm operation in the Marvell area.  Her business savvy as an overseer developed while they worked together as a team, as she was Big Dan’s “eyes.” Her love for food and watching others enjoy it led to a lifelong commitment to nurturing family, friends, and the community. Maggie Mae Eldridge departed this life Friday, Oct. 16, 2009 in Helena. She leaves to mourn her passing her children – Lou Evelyn and Clinton Torres, Theodore and Juanita Eldridge, Warren Eldridge, Alesia and Samuel Bone, Graffie Vera Eldridge and Adrinnie Eldridge, brother – David “Buddy” Dodd, sister – Graffie Bland; 11 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren; many adopted children, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and many, many wonderful caregivers. Franklin H. Alsobrook, Jr., 61, of Hope, formerly of Mansfield, La., died Friday, October 9, 2009, in a Hope hospital. He was born August 29, 1948, in Beaumont, Texas, to Franklin H. Sr., and Margie Reed Alsobrook. He was a pulp mill supervisor for International Paper Co.; former Nakoosa Edwards employee in Ashdown; former president of the union at Potlatch in McGee; former president of Jaycees, and former umpire and member of the Baseball Association in both Ashdown and Mansfield. He was a member of a non-denominational church. He was preceded in death by his mother, Margie; his grandmother who raised him, Ollie Trailor, and one sister, Diane Kennedy.  Horst Hohnhorst, 63, of Rosston, died Monday, October 19, 2009, at his home. He was born June 24, 1946, in Melchiorshausen, Germany, to the late Alfred Hohnhorst and Karoline Hohnhorst. He was a member of the German Army. He retired from Chrysler Corp., where he was a welder and millwright in Kenosha, Wis. He was a certified Journeyman, welder and blacksmith in Germany. John H. Taylor, 72, of Lewisville, died Saturday, October 17, 2009, at his home. He was born June 6, 1937, in Dallas, Texas, to Jean O. “J.O.” and Bertha Davis Taylor. He was a retired English teacher and masters degree graduate in English education of the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville; and a member of the Arkansas Retired Teachers Association and the Stamps Presbyterian Church in Stamps. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Norma Jean Bobo. Survivors include a nephew, Rev. Jimmy Bobo, of Malvern, and a niece, Linda Reddock, of Crowville, La. She was born September 22, 1945, in Smithton to Hubert Eugene “Tobe” and Lois Edith McDonald Toland. She graduated with a B.S.E. and an M.S.E. in mathematics from Henderson State University. She taught math for 16 years at Gurdon High School and for 20 years at Ouachita Baptist University. She was a member of Beech Street Baptist Church in Gurdon. She was preceded in death by her parents. NASHVILLE--Nelda Smith Wilson, 80, of Nashville, died Friday, October 16, 2009, at her home in Nashville. She was born March 17, 1929, near Center Point in Howard County, the daughter of the late Kenney and Verna Smith. She was preceded in death by an infant son. She was an amazing woman who touched so many lives in the community. She loved working in her yard and flower gardens. She enjoyed genealogy, traveling, and entertaining in her home. She was a tireless volunteer and philanthropist. Above all else, her family was her greatest pride and joy. She was co-owner of the Coca-Cola/Dr. Pepper Bottling Company. She was a member and longtime teacher of the Sunset Church of Christ. She was a graduate of Center Point High School, where she was valedictorian and member of the basketball team. She loved horseback riding on her horse Lightning. She was a charter member and past president of the Nashville Junior Auxiliary. She was active in the Mine Creek Chapter of Daughters of American Revolution and Friends of Southwest Arkansas Regional Archives. She headed the Easter Seals and the American Heart Association for many years in Howard County. She was active in the creation of the Howard County Heritage Club and instrumental in publishing the Howard County History Book. Most recently, she was serving on the Center Point renewal board and was very instrumental in the new community building and fire station. Additionally, she was a current member of the Howard Memorial Foundation and was so pleased to see the new hospital completed. Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Ramon Forrest Wilson; two sons, Kenneth Ramon Wilson and wife Tiffany Bearden Wilson and David Walker Wilson; one daughter, Elizabeth Wilson Overton and her husband, Walt Overton; two grandsons, Taylor and Joseph Wilson; three granddaughters, Cayse Harris Reese, Ashlee Wilson, and Jessica Harris Delozier; two great grandsons, Cameron Reese and Carsyn Delozier, and one great granddaughter, Grace Reese. She will be greatly missed by Sue Goodson, her lifelong best friend. Mrs. Pauline P. Buford, 80, of Celina, Texas, formerly of Prescott, died Saturday, October 17, 2009, at Settler’s Ridge Care Center in Celina, Texas. She was born in Prescott on March 10, 1929, and was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jake Buford; a brother, Thomas Parks; and two sisters, Marie Hart and Mildred Stednitz. Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Buford, of Allen, Texas; and two sisters, Catherine Simpson and Ann Hart, both of Little Rock. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 20, 20909, at Brazzel/Cornish Funeral Home Chapel in Prescott with Rev. Jerry G. Westmoreland officiating. Burial will follow in DeAnn Cemetery in Prescott under direction of Brazzel/Cornish Funeral Home. Read, 61, of Helena-West Helena will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009 in the Robert Lee Brown Memorial Chapel with Brother Charles Shipman officiating.  Burial will follow in the Oak Grove No.1 Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24. Read was born Aug. 19, 1948 in Indianapolis, Ind. He was a U.S. Army veteran and fought in the Vietnam War. He was a Baptist. He spent most of his life in the military and working as a mechanic. He passed away at his home on Oct. 2, 2009. Mr. Shelby Boston, 89, of Newport died Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009 at Jonesboro.  He was born Aug. 25, 1920 in Marcella, the son of J.N. and Eula Boston. He was preceded in death by his wife, Melba (Hess) Boston; two brothers, William Neal Boston and James A. Boston; and his parents. Mr. Boston is survived by one daughter, Ann Boston of Newport; one son, Danny Boston of Little Rock; a brother-in-law, Herman Hess of Rocky Hill, N.J.; his sister-in-law, Mary Conner of Augusta; and three nephews. Susan K. McCartney Fisher, 91, (born March 6, 1918) of Paragould, died Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2009, at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center. Mrs. Fisher was preceded in death by her parents, J.W. and Gladys Keesee; two brothers, John Keesee, Ferd Keesee; one sister, Martha Sylar; and husbands, Vaughn McCartney and Ted Fisher. She is survived by one son, William Vaughn “Bill” McCartney, his wife, Sheila; and one granddaughter, Elizabeth Susan “Beth” McCartney, all of Paragould. Mrs. Fisher served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a WAVE. For 37 years she was a teacher and counselor, work that she dearly loved. She began her teaching career in Elaine, then on to Marianna School District, Newport High School, Helena-West Helena Schools and Greene County Tech Junior High School. Mrs. Fisher was a Methodist. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Oct. 16, 2009 at Mitchell Funeral Chapel, Paragould, with Tom Letchworth officiating. Burial followed in Walnut Grove Cemetery, Newport. Wanda L. Stone Stevens, 86, of Prescott, died October 16, 2009, in Prescott. She was born July 8, 1923, in Blevins, to Jefferson Bolen and Maggie Bell McKinnon Stone. She worked as a secretary and a member of Midway Methodist Church, Nevada County Depot, and the Prescott Chamber of Commerce. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Paul Rhodes; her second husband, Vernon Stevens; her parents; one brother, Johnny B. Stone, and four sisters, Dorothy Allene Self, Vestie Mildred Jackson, Doris Marie Ridgell, and Mary Rose Perkins. Survivors include numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation was held Sunday, October 18, between 4-6 p.m. at Pharr Funeral Home of Prescott. Eugene Watson long time resident of Elaine died peacefully in his sleep at the Inn at the Amethyst Memory Care Center in Peoria, Arz. on Oct. 18 2009. Born to Forrest and Ethel Watson on July 5, 1921 in Geneva, Ind. he spent most of his life in Elaine. He leaves his wife, Eloise; a daughter, Genie Ramsden; grandchildren, Melanie and John Mowad and Keri Ramsden; two great-grandchildren, Abbey and Michael Mowad; a sister, Doris Marks; special nieces and nephews, Sharron and Don Wheatley and Clark and Chris Marks; and a host of friends in the Elaine area who were like family. Memorial services will be held at a later date. The family hopes that any memorials will be sent to the Disciple Group of the Elaine United Methodist Church in Elaine.   |

Elvin Wayne Anderson, 52, of Hope, died Saturday, October 10, 2009, at his home. He was a construction carpenter for FEMA and a painter. He loved to hunt and fish, especially fly-fishing. He was a member of Southside Baptist Church of Hope and was preceded in death by his mother, Jewell Walker Anderson. Survivors include his father, Jess Anderson; his maternal grandmother, Pauline Walker and one brother, Jerry Anderson, all of Hope; three sisters, Becky Campbell, of Washington, Connie Hawley and Jim, of Maumelle and Christy Anderson, of Washington; nephews Dustin Searcy, of Maumelle, and Enrique Campos, of Washington, and one niece, Jenifer Hawley, of Maumelle.
