Mr. Aleck Davenport, age 82, of Newport died Monday, Nov. 3, 2008. He was born Sept. 9, 1926 at Burgin Lake Community, the son of William and Dolly (Byrd) Davenport.

Funeral services for Ammie Pittman, 81, of Helena-West Helena will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, 2008 at the True Vine Baptist Church at 415 West Garland St., Helena-West Helena. Dr. L.E. Braggs will officiate. Burial will be in Jackson Memorial Cemetery in the Southland Community. Ammie born, Aug. 2, 1927 in Marvell to Maggie and Namon Braggs, died Oct. 31, 2008 at Helena Regional Medical Center. She confessed an everlasting hope in Jesus Christ at an early age at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Marvell. After living in Chicago she moved to West Helena in 1959 where she became a member of True Vine Baptist Church. She sang in the mass choir until her health failed her. She enjoyed visiting the sick. She leaves to cherish her memory two brothers, Matthew (Alma) Braggs of Helena-West Helena and Jimmie Braggs of Chicago; three sisters, James Ola Gine of St. Louis, Lula Mae Braggs Smith of Chicago and Annie Mae (Owens) Young of St. Louis; a special cousin, Juanita Mitchell of Helena-West Helena; and a host of relatives, nieces, nephews and her church family at True Vine. Active pallbearers will be Larry Braggs, Theodore Braggs, Donnell Braggs, Melvin Lacey, Freddy Stevenson and Larry Gine. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the True Vine Men’s Ministry and the Male Chorus. Calhoun Funeral Home in Helena will direct services.

Funeral services for Annie L. Kirby, 62, affectionately known as “Ms. Ann,” of Helena-West Helena will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, 2008 at the First Baptist Church in Oneida with the Rev. Jerome Webb officiating. Burial will follow in the Oneida Community Cemetery. Visitation will be tonight from 5 to 7 in the Robert Lee Brown Memorial Chapel. Kirby was born on June 10, 1946 to the late Ruthie Mae Willis and Daniel Sleigh. Her grandmother, Annie Williams-Jones, who preceded her in death, raised Ann. She confessed a hope in Christ at the early age of 12. In 1965, Annie Sleigh and Samuel Smith married. Ann and Sam moved to Chicago in 1966 and three sons were born to their union. She united in fellowship at Second Mt. Vernon Missionary Baptist Church in 1969. She was a faithful member for over 20 years. She sang in the mission choir and served as the pastor’s aide president. She worked for AT&T for 16 years as a telephone operator in Chicago. She worked at Wal-Mart in West Helena for seven years as a cashier and telephone operator and at the Phillips County Health Department for five years. Ann returned home to Arkansas in 1989. She reunited her fellowship with First Missionary Baptist Church in Oneida. She served as choir director, Sunday School teacher, pastor’s aide chairperson, served on program committees, as church announcer and was a master as a mistress of ceremony. She had a passion for singing for the Lord. Ann married Arthur Kirby on Nov. 3, 1993. Annie “Ann” Smith-Kirby entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2008 at Helena Regional Medical Center in Helena. She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband, Arthur Kirby of Helena; her sons, Frederick Allen Smith (Monique), Samuel Donte Smith (Cherry) and Randy Bernard Smith (Lisa) of Chicago; 15 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Alma Roberts-Jones (Arlee) of Orlando, Fla.; aunts, Willie Mae Roberts of Toledo, Ohio, Eula Roberts of Oneida and a host of cousins, relatives and dear friends. Neal, born Sept. 7, 1968 in Helena to Johnnie Louise Neal and the late Arthur Neal Sr., died Oct. 29, 2008. She was born in the light of God’s love and there He held her to proclaim her acceptance in Him, until her release from this world. She was baptized at an early age at the Galilee Missionary Baptist Church. She remained a faithful member at Galilee until her home going. She was preceded in death by her loving father, Arthur Neal Sr. and a nephew, Rodney Leach. She was a student at Phillips County Developmental Center in the adult training program for many years. She loved going to school and mingling with the other students and staff. She leaves to cherish her memory, her loving and devoted mother, Johnnie Neal; nine sisters, Annette (John) Hawkins and Lillian Leach of Helena-West Helena, Linda Davis of Los Angeles, Darnell (Ervin) Pugh of Charlotte, N.C. ROGERS -- Benjamin B. Davis, 86, of Rogers died Nov. 3, 2008, at Circle of Life Hospice Home in Springdale. He was born July 27, 1922, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Jay and Victoria Simon Davis.He was an Army veteran of World War II. He served in the Air Force Reserves until 1957. He was a 1948 graduate of the University of Iowa and earned a master's degree from the University of Iowa in 1950. He moved to Bella Vista in 1988. He was a member of the NEA.He was preceded in death by his son Clifford Davis and his wife, Eleanor, on July 4, 2007.Survivors include three sons, Jeffry Davis and wife Catherine of Woodard, Iowa, Edward Michael Davis and wife Andrea of Jacksonville, Fla., Paul Robert Davis and wife Clare of Payton, Colo.; his daughter, Janette Raymond and husband Scott of Pea Ridge; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.A time of remembering his life will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Fountain Plaza Club Room, 1500, W. FARMINGTON -- Bud Robertson, 71, of Farmington died Nov. 2, 2008, at Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville. He was born Sept. 22, 1937, in Burnsville, Miss., to Henry Wallace and Jessie Nagle Robertson.He was a manufacturing engineer for 23 years with Emerson Electric and 10 years with Mason-Chamberlain. He lived life to the fullest as a student at Marvell Junior High School and was also a loving brother, son, and uncle. His paternal parents, Richard and Queen Robinson, preceded him in death. He was born Aug. 8, 1926, in Redline, Iowa, to Otis and Helen Erickson Burger.He married Marcia Stofferson Findlay on May 19, 1970. He owned and operated Harlan Mechanical Contractor until retiring in 2000. Starks was the youngest of six children, born June 16, 1969 to Joe and Millie Reed Starks in Memphis. Pastor Starks, his wife Evet McCray Starks and children resided in Helena, Forrest City and West Memphis until recently when the moved to Southaven. Starks accepted the call to pastor the Walnut Grove, M.B. Church in Marvell, First St. Mark M.B. Church in Marvell and was the pastor of New Garden Church in Coldwater at the time of his death. In addition to teaching university classes, she was invited to give more than 500 presentations/lectures worldwide, authored or co-authored numerous textbooks, chapters, professional articles and educational films and videos.Betty truly reached the pinnacle of her field. She was honored with nearly every award her field has to offer. Her greatest legacy remains the hundreds of recreation professionals she helped train and the positive impact they now have on Parks and Recreation patrons.Betty is survived by a niece, Gayle van der Smissen Northrop and her husband Robert; a nephew, Craig van der Smissen and wife Nancy; a great-niece, Bethany van der Smissen and fiance Zach Jones; two great-nephews, Justus van der Smissen, Josh van der Smissen and wife Keeley and their children, Ayden and Onella; and hundreds of students to whom she dedicated her life.Betty was a founding member of the Association for Experimental Education. An endowment in her honor already exists there and was her preference for contributions. Her husband; three sons, Leroy, Adolph Jr., and Theopis; four sisters, Willie Louis, Laura Jones, Myrtle Page and Dovetta Holden preceded her in death. ANDERSON, Mo. -- Pinky Eugene Dobbs, 85, of Anderson died Nov. 3, 2008, at Freeman Hospital in Neosho, Mo. He was born June 7, 1923, in Beeman Hollow to Vernon E. and Wiley L. Tracy Dobbs.He was a 1942 graduate of Anderson High School. He married Mary Louise Hutchison, on Oct. 26, 1942. He was a farmer and had worked in an aircraft factory in Los Angeles. He was a Navy Veteran of World War II, serving 33 years until retiring in 1975 as commander sergeant major. He served in the Pacific Theater and two tours of duty in Vietnam. He returned to McDonald County, where he served as mayor of Pineville for two years. He was a member of Anderson Mason Lodge 621, the Odd Fellows and Scottish Rite. He was a longtime active member of the Anderson United Methodist Church.He was preceded in death by an infant son.Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Mary Dobbs of the home; his son, David Dobbs Sr. and wife Lieselotte of Goodman, Mo.; his daughter, Deborah S. BELLA VISTA -- Robert L. "Bob" Huffaker, 93, died Oct. 3, 2008. He was born in Anderson, Mo., to Robert and Minnie Huffaker.He served as teacher and basketball coach at Noel, Goodman and Anderson High School. He served several years in the Army Reserves and entered the Army in 1942. He completed Officer Candidate School and was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant in the Military Police Corps in 1943. He served 35 years in the military and rose to the rank of colonel. During World War II, he served in the Military Police, 2nd Cavalry Division and the 770th Military Police Battalion. His assignments included Chief Operations Division, Provost Marshall Office, Headquarters 8th Army, Korea, Provost Marshall, Army Aviation Center, Fort Rucker, Ala., Provost Marshall, 4th Armored Division, Germany, associate professor of military science, University of Texas and Provost Marshall, Vietnam, under Gen. William Westmoreland. His honors included the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Merit Medal Republic of Vietnam and others.After retirement from the Army in 1968, he began another career with a real estate development company in Florida. He became vice president of the company while living in Palm Bay, Fla. He retired in 1990 to Bella Vista.Survivors include his son, Robert (Kitty) Huffaker of Montgomery, Ala.; his daughter, Susan (Michael) Dunham of Oklahoma City; his grandchildren, Robert Austin (Cecily) Huffaker, Matthew Lee (Caroline) Huffaker and Michael Drew Dunham and his great-grandchildren.A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Ozark Funeral Home in Anderson, Mo. Vergie was honored to be able to see five generations three times in her life. Known to most people as “Aunt Vergie,” she will be remembered for the love and laughter that she freely shared with everyone, but above all, she will be remembered for her devotion to the Lord.
