He was born Jan. 6, 1920, in Rogers, the younger son of James William and Lena McSpadden Sutherland. He was an Eagle Scout in Troop 108, a member of First Methodist Church and graduated from Rogers High School. He studied broadcast journalism at the University of Arkansas and the University of Iowa (1938-41), before enlisting in the Army. He served in the Army Medical Corps during World War II, rising to the rank of captain. After discharge in 1945, he studied architecture under Walter Gropius in the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University, earning an M.A. in 1949. While in Boston, he worked for Coletti Brothers Architects (1947-1952), and also met Martha Clark Slocum. They were married in 1951, and moved to Europe in 1952, where he joined the American architectural firm of Daniel, Mann, Johnson and Mendenhall, first in Paris, France, and later in London, England. Their first two children were born in London. They returned to the United States in 1958 when Cyrus joined the nascent Department of Architecture at the University of Arkansas. He and the other early faculty were a remarkable constellation of talent, including John Williams, Fay Jones, Herbert Fowler, Ernest Jacks and Keith McPheeters. He taught there for 32 years and mentored hundreds of students until he retired in 1990. In 1989, he helped to establish the Teaching Academy for the promotion of outstanding academic practices at the university. He taught all levels of design, and materials and construction; his courses in architectural history especially were enriched by the researches of three sabbatical leaves spent in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. But his most significant contribution to the college began in 1976, when he created a new course, historic preservation and established it as a permanent discipline. Over the next 14 years, he and his students documented countless historic properties in Arkansas and enrolled many on the National Register of Historic Places. He also pioneered the study of vernacular architecture, traveling widely around the state to document regionally unique structures. He devoted his life to the preservation of architectural patrimony. In Arkansas, he served on the Arkansas Territorial Restoration (later the Arkansas History Museum), the State Review Board for Architectural Preservation, the Arkansas Natural Heritage Association, the Washington and Benton County Historical societies, and he helped found the Historic Preservation Alliance of Arkansas and served on its board of directors. At the national level, he was a member of the American Institute of Architects and the Society of Architectural Historians and for the National Trust for Historic Preservation he served as the Arkansas adviser, a national director and as director emeritus. In addition he carried on an active private architectural practice. During his career, he designed 17 residences, two public libraries, three churches and one school, built at various sites in Northwest Arkansas, in addition to directing several historic restoration projects around the state. His many distinctions include a grant from the Arkansas Endowment for the Humanities, the Arkansas Alumni Association Distinguished Teaching Award, the Parker Westbrook Achievement Award for Historic Preservation and the Historic Preservation and Service Award from the Main Street Project of Rogers. In 1990, he was awarded the rank of university professor and in 2002, he received the lifetime Achievement Award from the Arkansas Historical Association for contributions to the study, preservation and teaching of Arkansas history.Cyrus was also known as an active volunteer, freely giving of his time and expertise to various civic and academic causes and institutions. Skeeter was born June 10, 1971, in Fayetteville. He is survived by five children, daughters Taylor Bullock, Tyra Bullock, Tamara Bullock and Kali Baird; and William Smith, a son; Christian Butler, a grandson. He loved his family and spoke often of them to the many people that he touched in our community. His decade of work at the New School, beginning in 1997, positively influenced a generation of children, their parents and his co-workers at the school. He was an integral member of the Fayetteville Athletic Club, working in their youth programs. He impacted many, both on and off the court, through his enthusiastic work with Team Arkansas, where he served as vice president and coach for many years. He was a much-loved member of the basketball community, continually mentoring both the kids involved in the programs and other coaches.Skeeter's passion in life was working with children, brightening their future with each interaction as he taught them about sports, teamwork and commitment. Above all, he taught them the importance of embracing life and making each day count. Skeeter's resilience in the face of adversity, optimism for the future, and never-ending beautiful smile are just a few of the hallmarks that will long be remembered.Skeeter continued to work with kids to the very end of his short life. The kids Skeeter mentored truly loved him, and there is no higher compliment. Skeeter's early death is a great loss to his family and friends, but especially to the children of Northwest Arkansas. His legacy lives on through the accomplishments of the many people whose lives he touched. Indeed, his influence will not stop with this generation but will be felt for many years to come as the endless people influenced by Skeeter will then raise, praise and mentor children of their own -- following the examples they learned from Skeeter.Skeeter leaves behind five minor children. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to help the family with burial expenses. Any donations above the cost of burial will go into a fund to help his children.
